Many of the Scanner Master staff are rail-fans who love to watch trains and listen to their radio communications as well. In the United States rail-fanning with scanner radios is a major hobby. In Europe its air-scanning many people love watching planes land at airports and listening to their air-to-ground communications. Air-scanning is growing in popularity in America as well. Most low-cost scanners are able to listen to either rail or air frequencies although note that there are some railroads that are using a type of digital radio that no scanner can currently receive (for the most part this is pretty limited today). Some hobbyists prefer a high-end receiver, such as an AOR for their air scanning for the ultimate in reception. Below are our recommendations for top, low-cost, scanner radios that will do the job well.
